Carol and Arthur Rosser: Firing Workshop

Carol and Arthur Rosser will conduct a four day firing workshop from Saturday April 23rd to Tuesday April 26th 2011. Participants can bring a few pots to fire and help pack the kiln and stoke during a 40 hour firing with the aim  of producing anagama-like natural ash effects. The venue is near Nubeena, on the scenic Tasman Peninsula about 104 km from the Hobart airport. A bus service is available to Nubeena and from there to the conference after the workshop. Further details, including a map, are available on Carol and Arthur Rosser's workshop page.

Ian Jones and Moraig McKenna: The What, How and Why of Woodfiring

Lisa Boyter and Rudolf Sibrava of Artisan Pottery and Gallery in Northern Tasmania, will host a two day pre Woodfire Tasmania 2011 Workshop with Gundaroo Potters Ian Jones  & Moraig McKenna of Old St Lukes Pottery. Artisan Pottery is situated in the heart of the Tamar Valley wine producing area, adjacent to endearing bush, beach, and river walks. Participants will gain valuable insights into ‘clay bodies for woodfiring’ and ‘making for woodfiring’ - all their tricks. Ian will demonstrate making large hand built platters, coil throwing, and coil building, while Moraig will demonstrate slab construction methods, and thrown and altered forms. In addition they will present slide talks about their work and their Gundaroo studio and kilns.

Date:  Tues 26th & Wed 27th April 2011

Location: Artisan Gallery & Pottery, 32 Deviot Road, Robigana, West Tamar, Tas,

Ben Richardson and Donna Gilliss: "Out of Place" Workshop

Over 25 years ago Donna Gilliss and Ben Richardson met in the Imbe area of Japan, famous for Bizen ware, where they packed and fired Donna's nobori-ana-gama together. Donna had studied architecture in New York before studying ceramics in Sweden and Japan in the 1960s. Later she apprenticed with Mitsuru Isezaki and Jun Isezaki in Imbe and continues to live nearby, now firing in Thai-style kilns. Since that influential meeting in Japan, Ben has continued to develop his place-based making approach by working with local clays and glaze materials and firing using black wattle from his land.

Now they come together again for this workshop in Tasmania, to renew their friendship and share their different experiences and techniques of working "out of place" as part of the Woodfire Tasmania pre-conference program.

Day 1 - Sunday April 24th
A field trip visit to the edge of nearby Pipeclay Lagoon, with time there to make temporary work with the clay that can be dug from the lagoon. We then return to the workshop for lunch (supplied) and continue to work on experimental sculpture work for the afternoon.

Day 2 - Monday April 25th
In the workshop with demonstrations by Donna and Ben (half day each making with wheel slab etc.  Evening meal included with pizza from the woodfired oven.
